Yellow Hammer

A summer morning

cycle ride round country lanes -

all peace and sunshine.

Verges burgeoning

with marjoram growing wild

and downland flowers.

And from the hedgerows

a call for ‘A little bit

of bread and no cheese.’

Yellow hammer song

bringing back memories of

childhood in Dorset -

parents reciting

the birds’ familiar refrain

out on local walks.

Continuity

in this different time and place -

nature’s connection.

I get home to find

a small, yellow-tipped feather

attached to a spoke,

tied on like a gift

with the silk of a spider

as a memento.
