River in flood, purposeful, powerful,

but with patches of stillness and calm,

and with a countercurrent near the bank

with smaller swirls within the eddy.

All of the water eventually rejoins the main flow,

as I watch.

Reflecting life, sometimes licking along,

other times contentedly peaceful

and at others accompanied by

a sense of going backwards or,

worse still, spiralling downwards.

All of the water eventually rejoins the main flow,

as do we.
